Objectives Europe is a leader in developing institutions and mechanisms to protect and promote human rights. The European Convention on Human Rights was the world's first binding human rights document. It led to the creation of the European Court of Human Rights, which processes over 50,000 appeals per year. The Council of Europe is the principal human rights institution in Europe, but the European Union and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) are increasingly engaged in advancing human rights throughout the region. Europe faces a wide range of human rights challenges, from the illegal deportation of asylum seekers to domestic violence against women. This course addresses five themes in particular: asylum, minority rights, human rights of women, social rights, and torture.
